There are 200 million internet users in India but only one third of total internet users (60 million) are females. Therefore, to get more female users online Google has launched an initiative called “Helping Women Get Online”. This initiative aims to bring over 50 million Indian women online by end of the year 2014.

This campaign is among the best campaigns started by Google till now. Perhaps you remember that Google had started a campaign named “Start Searching India” in July 2013 to make Indian users aware of unique search features of Google.

“Helping Women Get Online” (HWGO) is similar to “Start Searching India” in some context as it also aims to raise the awareness of internet, however HWGO initiative purely aims to empower Indian women instead of whole internet users.

Intel, Axis bank, Future Group and Hindustan Unilever Limited are the major partners of this initiative with Google. They are determined to enable easy internet access points across the country for women. A pilot project of this initiative has already tested in Rajasthan's Bhilwara District where Google trained 100,000 women about internet.

Google has developed a website www.hwgo.com for this campaign which provides step by step helpful information to use the internet in a simple and significant way. It covers areas like ‘Computer basics’, ‘Internet skills’, ‘Chat and Email’ etc. Users can also access some valuable information about childcare, cooking & recipes, finance, household and much more according to personal interest on the website. This website serves its content in both Hindi and English languages.
